Esther

by Joseph Yosuk Lee

Even though Esther was a prophetess, Esther was not a feminist, because she obeyed her uncle Mordecai. In fact, Mordecai commanded Esther to hide her identity as Jew, and Esther obeyed. Esther was a great Israelite. She did play a major role in the history of her people by saving her people by risking her life. Every brother and sister in Christ should follow her example by giving up his or her life for the sake of the gospel. (Luke 17:33) However, the sisters should not follow Esther's example by making the brothers stumble in terms of lust when she entered a beauty pageant. (Matthew 18:6) We should also not follow her example when she married King Ahasuerus, who was a non-Israelite. (2 Corinthians 6:14-16) It is true that Esther's marriage with King Ahasuerus was from God, and her entrance into a beauty pageant was from God. Esther's obedience to her uncle, a man, was also from God, according to 1 Timothy 2:11-15. Although the Book of Esther does support the anti-feminist view, we should not follow her example by obeying our pastors, especially if they contradict the Word of God through their sin or disobedience.
