Holy Spirit

Trinity Part I

A Biblical Defense against the Teachings of the Jehovah’s Witnesses
by Joseph Yosuk Lee

The Christian Research Institute defines trinity as: In the nature of one eternal God, there are three eternally distinct Persons, the Father, the Son, and Holy Spirit. All three are the same God, all fully God, yet the Father is neither the Son nor the Spirit, the Son is neither the Father nor the Spirit, and the Spirit is neither the Father nor the Son.”

Tragically, many Christians do not know that the Holy Spirit is a person, and many others do not acknowledge His existence and importance. In fact, when I was a struggling Christian, a pastor almost flunked me in my Baptismal quiz for defining trinity as three personalities in one God, implying that there are three 1/3 persons in one God.

So, where does the Bible say that the Holy Spirit is God and that He is a person? You can see that the Holy Spirit is God in these following verses:

“...“Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit?...You have not lied to men, but to God.”” Acts 5:3

“Now I urge you, brethren, by our Lord Jesus Christ and by the love of the Spirit, to strive together with me in your prayers to God for me.” Romans 15:30

“And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.” Ephesians 4:30

“For all who are being led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.” Romans 8:14

According to the Funk and Wagnells Standard Dictionary, the word “person” is an individual with a distinct entity or personality. When we speak of “one God in three persons,” we use the word “person” to describe a living entity that has three characteristics: intellect, will and emotions. Each of these three components is essential to any “personal being.” The Three are equal in power and glory but distinct from one another. You can see that the Holy Spirit is more than just a force in these following verses:

Holy Spirit teaches: “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and brings to your remembrance all that I said to you.” John 14:26

Holy Spirit guides: “But when He, the Spirit of truth, comes, He will guide into all truth; for He will not speak on His own initiative, but whatever He hears, He will speak; and He will disclose it to you.” John 16:13

Holy Spirit witnesses: “And we are witnesses of these things; and so is the Holy Spirit, whom God has given to those who obey Him.” Acts 5:32

Holy Spirit aids and intercedes: “And in the same way the Spirit also helps our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we should, but the Spirit Himself intercedes for us with groaning too deep for words:” Romans 8:26

Holy Spirit knows of God: “For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the spirit of the man which is in him? Even so the thoughts of God no one knows except the Spirit of God.” 1 Corinthians 2:11

Holy Spirit reveals: “which in our generations was not made known to the sons of men, as it has now been revealed to His holy apostles and prophets in the Spirit.” Ephesians 3:5

Holy Spirit calls and commissions: “Be on guard for yourselves and for all the flock, among which the Holy Spirit has made you overseers, to shepherd the church of God which He purchased with His own blood.” Acts 20:28

Last of all, you can see that trinity is stated in Matthew 28:19, which says, “Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit.” Please note that the word “name” is singular which shows one God in three persons.
